What is a wiki?

It's like an online notebook which can be shared by a group of people. We'll be sharing this wiki to keep track of what we do in our numeracy group.

Why are we using a wiki in numeracy?

Many of you have mastered many of the numeracy skills you require in primary school so I'd like to open up your learning during this time. I will of course be checking with each of you that you have the skills required and then you will be able to design your own program, so long as it continues to improve your numeracy skills.

We will have a focus for each fortnight - just like we focused on decimal counting first, so your goals should where possible, fit in with our current topic.
I'd love you to come up with your own ideas about how you can further develop your skills in numeracy. Whenever you have an idea you can add it to our ideas page (see the link to the left).

At the beginning of each numeracy session you will need to write a note about how you intend to spend your time on the My next goal page. At the end of the lesson you will need to make a comment about how you went.

Remember that although we'll be using this wiki to track our learning you don't need to use the computer to improve your numeracy skills. If you plan to work on logic, you might like to play chess. I'll also try and collect some other games that develop numeracy skills and if you have your own and you get your parents permission and mine we could use them too. Other ideas would be to think of ways to apply maths in real life. Think of a mathematical problem and solve it - for example how large does a chicken pen need to be for 6 hens? How much money could the school make each year from selling eggs?

Obviously for this to work it will need your full participation and enthusiasm. It will only be as interesting and fun as you make it.
